Ford Transit conversion concept
A fixed-bed Transit layout that keeps the sleeping area ready
Illustrative planning concept. Not a completed or road-tested conversion. This arrangement explores a permanent rear bed and a front-right kitchen, leaving the left sliding-door entrance clear within the Ford Transit L3H2 FWD reference.

A starting point to question.
A permanent lengthways bed leaves a kitchen opposite the sliding door, with clear space to enter at the front left.
- Reference vehicle
- Ford Transit L3H2 FWD
- Nominal bare cargo envelope
- 1784 mm wide × 3533 mm long
- Illustrated wall allowance
- 40 mm on each side
- Left sliding-door opening: published 1,300 × 1,700 mm. Its front edge is placed an estimated 100 mm behind the cargo-front datum.
- A 600 mm deep entrance strip is kept clear in this illustration; it is a planning assumption, not an access standard.
- Bed: 1,300 × 1,900 mm illustrative footprint.
- The rear storage and system equipment would share the space below the platform.
- Bed height, wheel-arch cutouts, fixing points and equipment access remain to be resolved.
All furniture sizes are chosen for this illustration. They are not surveyed dimensions or a construction specification.
The brief: a bed that does not need making into furniture
This concept starts with a permanent sleeping area. The bed runs lengthways at the rear, so the 1,900 mm dimension follows the cargo length rather than assuming the van is wide enough for that sleeping length. A compact kitchen sits towards the front right, opposite the left sliding-door entrance.
The main trade-off is clear: the bed occupies its floor area throughout the day. The concept has no dedicated indoor dining arrangement or enclosed bathroom. Adding either would require a new comparison of space, rather than treating the visible gaps as already suitable for another feature.
What the plan actually shows
The reference is the Mk8 L3H2 front-wheel-drive Transit in Ford's UK 25.5 model-year table. Its nominal cargo dimensions are 3,533 mm long, 1,784 mm maximum width and 1,886 mm high. The diagram uses a floor rectangle and a separate illustrative 40 mm side band, not a surveyed finished interior.
The bed footprint is 1,300 × 1,900 mm, centred across the rectangle and set 100 mm forward of its rear limit. The 500 × 1,200 mm kitchen sits along the front right. A 600 mm deep strip inside the left sliding door remains clear. Its position is estimated, and the strip is a planning assumption rather than an access standard. Furniture dimensions do not specify panels, hardware, a mattress or appliance clearances.
Treat the volume beneath the bed as an access question
The floor plan does not set the bed platform height or draw any equipment beneath it. If you want to use that volume for a tank, electrical equipment or belongings, develop their envelopes and access separately. Panel thickness, supports, connectors and the way an item is removed can change the space substantially.
Decide which belongings need access from the rear doors and which must be reachable from inside. Try those tasks with the mattress and bedding in place. If equipment shares the area, keep its maintenance route visible instead of counting the entire bed footprint as luggage storage.
The checks that decide whether to develop it
Measure the available width at the intended bed height, including the lining and upper-wall curve. Check the real wheel arches, local ribs and door mechanisms against the furniture. Then test getting into bed, using the front units and opening their storage at full size in the van.
Use the editable fixed-bed Transit starting layout to explore a similar arrangement, then resize the furniture to your measurements. It is not an exact reconstruction of this diagram or a construction drawing. Open the sliding door to review the entrance and add actual equipment envelopes in their layers. The dimensioned question remains: does a permanent bed earn the space it occupies for your trips?
