Volkswagen Transporter 6.1 conversion planning

VW Transporter 6.1 dimensions for a compact campervan layout

Compare three panel-van references from the archived UK T6.1 dimension sheet: SWB normal roof, LWB normal roof and LWB high roof. These references describe the Transporter 6.1 generation, with generic editable contours in the planner.

Compare the supported body sizes

All dimensions below are in millimetres. Cargo widths and heights are published maxima for an unconverted reference, before insulation, lining or furniture. Match the body, drivetrain and source edition to your vehicle.

On a narrow screen, scroll the table sideways to compare every measurement. The side-door column gives the nominal opening width × height, rather than its position along the van.

The editable wall and roof contours, wheel-arch shapes and door positions are reconstructed planning estimates. These references are not manufacturer CAD or a measured survey of your van. Check the actual vehicle before cutting or ordering parts.

Compare the extra length with the daytime layout

The listed LWB floor length is 403 mm greater than SWB, while maximum cargo width and the normal-roof height stay the same. Explore what the extra length changes in your own arrangement: a longer kitchen, more storage or an easier bed changeover, rather than assuming it solves every clearance.

In a compact interior, a bed and seating may need to share floor space. Compare a permanent platform with an extending or bench arrangement, including where bedding and loose equipment go at night. Keep the entrance and the space needed to open cupboards visible in both states.

Compare fixed beds and convertible benches

Check sitting and sleeping space after the lining

The normal-roof references list 1,410 mm unlined cargo height. Subtract the actual floor and roof build-ups before checking seated headroom or the space above a mattress. The LWB high-roof reference lists 1,940 mm; this is a different factory reference, not a simulation of a pop-top.

The 1,700 mm maximum width is not a measured cross-van bed span at every height. Record the width at mattress and shoulder heights, then try furniture dimensions against those measurements. The planner's generic wall curve cannot decide whether a tightly fitted bed or cabinet will fit your Transporter.

Allow for your floor, roof and wall build-ups

Reserve service space before filling the benches

Place the selected water and electrical equipment alongside the furniture, with room to operate controls and remove service items. A bench footprint may need to accommodate both storage and equipment; trace the connections with the furniture still visible.

Measure the real arches, door mechanisms and local wall widths before refining close-fitting panels. Use the measurement guide to keep a record of which figures came from the vehicle and which remain assumptions, then update the editable reference.

A few useful answers.

Does this page cover the newest VW Transporter?

No. These are archived Transporter 6.1 UK panel-van references. Check the generation and exact vehicle before applying them; a shared Transporter name does not make different generations interchangeable.

Does the Transporter planner include a pop-top?

The three listed references include normal roofs and the recorded LWB factory high-roof envelope. They do not establish an aftermarket elevating roof's geometry, structure or installation suitability.
