Fiat Ducato conversion concept

A Ducato layout with opposing benches and a shared sleeping area

Illustrative planning concept. Not a completed or road-tested conversion. Two rear benches explore a daytime lounge with a central gap, then a wider night-time bed footprint in the Ducato L3H2 reference.

A starting point to question.

Two rear benches create a social area during the day and an illustrated full-width sleeping zone at night.

Reference vehicle
Fiat Ducato L3H2
Nominal bare cargo envelope
1870 mm wide × 3705 mm long
Illustrated wall allowance
40 mm on each side
  • Left sliding-door opening: published 1,250 × 1,755 mm. Its front edge is placed an estimated 100 mm behind the cargo-front datum.
  • A 600 mm deep entrance strip is kept clear in the daytime and night layouts; it is a planning assumption, not an access standard.
  • Each bench: 500 × 1,900 mm illustrative footprint; nominal gap: 750 mm.
  • Dashed bed outline: 1,750 × 1,900 mm. Supports, cushions and the conversion mechanism are not designed here.
  • The benches are for use while parked, not approved travel seats.

All furniture sizes are chosen for this illustration. They are not surveyed dimensions or a construction specification.

The brief: give the rear area a daytime use

This arrangement uses opposing benches along the rear sides of the van. Each is 500 mm wide and 1,900 mm long, leaving a nominal 750 mm gap between their rectangular envelopes. The front kitchen sits on the right, leaving the left sliding-door entrance clear.

The idea is to compare a shared lounge and sleeping area with the permanent footprint of a fixed bed. The central gap is part of the daytime layout, while the dashed night outline spans it. Whether that change suits you depends on the routine, bedding storage and furniture construction you develop, not just the room shown between two rectangles.

Read the width as a stated assumption

The reference is the UK 2022 X290 L3H2 Ducato, labelled LH2 in Fiat's Camper brochure. The stated cargo area is 3,705 mm long, up to 1,870 mm wide and 1,932 mm high. The diagram represents a nominal floor rectangle and an illustrative 40 mm occupied band on each side.

The bench envelopes begin 60 mm from each outer side, so the 1,750 × 1,900 mm night outline includes both benches and their 750 mm gap. This is a dimensioned concept, not a measured clear bed width at cushion height. Lining, wall shape, the real arches and local fittings can change that span and the furniture beneath it.

Plan the parts that move between day and night

The drawing does not supply an infill panel, table system or tested support arrangement. Decide how the centre would be used during the day and how any removable parts would be stored. Consider the cushion shapes and bedding alongside that decision, because their storage can displace the volume you expected to use for clothing or equipment.

Test opening the benches with their cushions in place and with the sleeping area made up. Equipment inside a bench needs its own envelope and access. A floor plan cannot establish the strength of a seat or bed, and the benches here are living-space concepts rather than approved travel seats.

Develop the front units without losing the comparison

The front-right kitchen footprint is 500 × 1,200 mm. A 600 mm deep strip inside the left sliding door remains clear in daytime and night layouts. Its position is estimated, and the strip is a planning assumption rather than an access standard. Check the actual door, mechanisms and selected appliances before using the outlines as furniture dimensions. Added bathrooms, tall storage or extra seating need another layout review.

Try the editable Ducato twin-bench starting layout, then inspect the 3D wall and arch relationship. It is inspired by this concept rather than an exact reconstruction of the drawing. Bring your selected tanks and electrical equipment into their layers and repeat the access checks. The drawing and starting layout are planning examples, not a construction pack; compare whether a shared rear area earns the effort of changing it each evening.
